BESSIE NAVALANY

Bessie (Botwinski) Navalany, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Edward Hospital.She was born Feb. 12, 1911, in Chicago.

Mrs. Navalany was a resident of Naperville and member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church since 1942.

She is survived by two daughters, Bess (husband Pat) Patterman of Sandwich and Jacqueline (husband Andrew) Miller of Oswego; five grandchildren, James (wife Debbie) Patterman of North Aurora, Janice (husband Bob) Arvin of Oswego, Pamela Olsen of Oswego, Tom Miller of Edgerton, Wis., and Mark Miller of Oswego; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew, Beth, B.J., Patrick, Frank Miller, Renee and Frank Olsen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband James Navalany; five brothers, Tony, Frank, Joe, Wally and Bruno Botwinski; and three sisters, Caroline Voytek, Clara Wojciehowski and Wanda Botwinski.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 26 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

Interment will be at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Catholic Masses in Mrs. Navalany's name are preferred.

Paul B. Riedy, 85, of Naperville, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at ManorCare Health Services in Naperville.

He was born Sept. 2, 1914, in Naperville in a stone house at on the corner of Chicago Avenue and Olesen Drive to Julian and Theresa (Weisbrook) Riedy.

Mr. Riedy was a dealer for the Standard Oil Co. and had a station on the corner of Jackson Avenue and Washington Street from 1939 to 1944. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific and the Far East, and was part of the Seabees.

He served as a volunteer fireman in Naperville for 25 years.

He was a life member of the Naperville VFW Post 3873; SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he served as usher for many years; and Knights of Columbus Naperville Council 1369.

He is survived by two sons, Keith (wife Kathleen) Riedy of Naperville and Mark (wife Erin) Riedy of Del Mar, Calif.; one daughter, Sally Vermaat of Naperville; six grandchildren, Vicki Riedy of Naperville, Brian (wife Julie) Riedy of Bolingbrook, Jennifer (husband Fred) Salamon of Reston, Va., John (wife Becky) Riedy of Santa Monica, Calif., and Timothy (wife Nancy) Vermaat of Lisle and Tracy Vermaat of Middlebury, Vt.; one brother, Elmer (wife Virginia) Riedy of Rancho Bernado, Calif.; one sister, Margarite Springborn of Naperville; one sister-in-law, Josephine Weber of Aurora; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn (Weber); and one brother, Henry Riedy.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 117 W. Van Buren Ave., Naperville.

The funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, from the funeral home to a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

Interment will be at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Frank T. Trossen Sr., 62, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at his Racine, Wis., home.

He was born Jan. 23, 1937, to Frank and Hertha Wanasek (Vostrel) Trossen.

Formerly of Naperville, Mr. Trossen served in the Navy Reserves before joining the Marine Corps.

He was a 1965 graduate of North Central College. He taught at Naperville Central High School from 1966 until his retirement in 1993. During that time, he coached the boys swimming team for more than 20 years.

He also coached wrestling, football and track.

He was instrumental in the referendum to get a swimming pool built at Naperville Central.

He also helped with the annual disaster drill and EMS training in Naperville.

He spent his summers and time off helping the elderly with odd jobs.

He was married to Mari Schirmer for 27 years.

He is survived by two sons, Frank Trossen III of Bloomington and Matthew Trossen of Lisle; one daughter, Jennifer (husband Matthew) Weddle of Naperville; one granddaughter, Cassandra Weddle; two sisters, Bette (husband Dan) Organ and Sandee (husband Mike) Hendrickson, all of Racine; two brothers, Don (wife Jan) Trossen, Alvin (wife Carol) Trossen, all of Racine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Steve Wanasek; and a nephew, Tracy Manderfield.

The funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Purath-Strand Funeral Home, 3915 Douglas Ave., Racine, Wis., with visitation beginning at 5 p.m.

Interment is private.

A memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Community United Methodist Church, 20 N. Center St., Naperville.

'Jack' Burggraf, 70, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Aurora Manor Nursing Center.

He was born June 6, 1929, in Chicago to John and Wilhelmina Burggraf.

He was a resident of Naperville since 1965. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from DePaul University in 1953. He worked as a supervisor for Western Electric for 31 years.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of Judd Kendall Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3873. He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

He is survived by two sons, Mark Burggraf of Geneva and Jay Burggraf of Aurora; two daughters, Colleen (husband Tim) Hayes of Oceanside, Calif., and Erin (husband Chris) Oury of Naperville; a sister, Rosemary (husband Ken) Jones of Melrose Park; and a brother, Donald Burggraf of Rhinelander, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose (Struch), in 1981, and his parents.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 117 W. Van Buren Ave., Naperville. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at the funeral home and proceed to an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth Ave., Naperville.

Interment will take place at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery in Naperville.

Virginia A.

'Gin' Herpel, 86, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at her Noblesville, Ind., home.

She was born May 17, 1913, in Louisville, Ky.

Mrs. Herpel was a resident of Naperville from 1970 to 1995, when she moved to Noblesville.

Raised in Louisville, she married Henry Herpel, who survives her, on June 8, 1933. A homemaker, she resided in Cincinnati; Indianapolis; Lombard; Morristown, N.J.; and Minneapolis before moving to Naperville in 1970. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a volunteer at St. Patrick's Residence and a member of its guild.

She was a past recipient of the Croagh Patrick Award for volunteer of the year. She was a member of the Serra Club of DuPage County.She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and making crafts.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Henry (wife Jan) Herpel Jr. of Greensburg, Ind.; a daughter, Marilyn Ann (husband Ed) Seiwert of Noblesville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald (wife Helen) Shircliff of Freeport, Fla.; one sister, Linda Shircliff of Louisville; her stepmother, Adelaide Shircliff of Louisville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.

The funeral service will begin 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the funeral home followed by a noon Mass of Christian burial at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 26 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

Interment will be at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery in Naperville.

'Woody' Hayward, 41, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at his Lisle home.

He was born March 2, 1958, in LaGrange.

Raised in Downers Grove, Mr. Hayward moved to Lisle in 1986. He was a 1976 graduate of Downers Grove High School.

He married his wife, Judy, who survives him, on May 23, 1987. He was employed by Comstock Excavating Co. in Hinsdale and recently by L&J Excavating in St. Charles as a heavy equipment operator.

He was a member of Local 150 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Naperville.

He is survived by his wife; his mother, Diane (Weidner) Hayward of Downers Grove; one brother, Greg Hayward of Downers Grove; his grandmother, Irene Hayward of LaGrange Park; two aunts and one uncle.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Hayward.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1450 Green Trails Drive, Naperville, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Interment is private.

Marie A. Ray, 89, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Snow Valley Healthcare Center in Lisle.

She was born March 28, 1910, in Chicago.

A resident of Lisle and formerly of Warrenville, Mrs. Ray worked for the Chicago Public Library system for many years.

She is survived by one daughter, Rose-Mary Krueger of Glen Ellyn; three grandchildren, Deanna (husband Bob) Caras of Arlington Heights, Karen (husband Jim) Hogan of Oak Forest, and Charles (wife Pam) Krueger of Warrenville; and five great-grandchildren, Alex, Chad, Michael, Matthew and Jimmy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford A. Ray, in 1973.

Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton.

The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.

Gordon A. McLaren, 62, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Edward Hospital.

He was born May 6, 1937, in Westwood, Mass., to Henry and Alta (Weed) McLaren.

A resident of Naperville since 1971, Mr. McLaren was employed by Dott Computer Systems as a regional manager.

He was a 1959 graduate of Bowdoin College, receiving a bachelor of arts and science degree.

He married Gayle Ness, who survives him, in 1957. He enjoyed curling at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Jeffrey (wife Talinda) McLaren of Keller, Texas, and Donald McLaren of Chicago; two daughters, Lauri (husband Steve) Fields of Cary and Glynnis (husband John) Kretschmar of Cary; six grandchildren, Andrew, Marcus, Jake, Kasey, Matthew and Kalie; his parents; two sisters, Nancy (husband John) Turner of Westwood, Mass., and Diane (husband Bill) Morris of Griffin, Ga.; one brother, Parker (wife Barbara) McLaren of Orrs Island, Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.

A private funeral service will take place Friday, Jan. 28, at the funeral home.

The Rev. Nathan Bartel will officiate.

Interment is private.
