RACINE COUNTY IS 'CAPITAL FOR THE DAY' ON JUNE 6 - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

Gov. Jim Doyle, D-Wis., issued the following news release:

Gov. Jim Doyle announced today that Racine County is 'Capital for the Day' on Tuesday, June 6, 2006. Gov. Doyle will bring First Lady Jessica Doyle, Lt. Gov. Lawton, and members of his Cabinet to Racine County to meet with local citizens and local government and business leaders to make sure their views are heard in Madison.

'I am committed to making life more affordable for middle-class families in Southeastern Wisconsin, and across the state,' Governor Doyle said. 'Our time in Racine County will focus on how we continue to grow our economy, and help residents who are getting squeezed. This is a vibrant and vital part of the state - with hardworking people and strong families, and I'm looking forward to taking my administration there on June 6th.'

The day will start at 8:00 a.m. at a breakfast with business and community leaders at the Aurora Wellness Center in Burlington and will end at 4:30 p.m. with a reception at the Radisson Inn Harbourwalk in Racine. Governor Doyle, First Lady Doyle, Lt. Governor Lawton, and members of the Governor's Cabinet will attend the breakfast event. Throughout the day, the leaders will split up and visit communities across Racine County, and will then come back together to attend the evening event.

Visit to LDV, Inc. 180 Industrial Drive Burlington

Governor Doyle and Commerce Secretary Mary Burke will tour LDV, Inc. and meet with its leadership and employees. LDV, Inc. provides Homeland Security vehicles, mobile tool stores, and other specialized interiors for a variety of customers. An LDV Mobile Command Center is featured in Spike Lee's new movie Inside Man.

Visit to Fox River Middle School 921 West Main Street Waterford

The Governor will discuss the Wisconsin Covenant with the seventh graders from at Fox River Middle School. The Wisconsin Covenant is the Governor's proposal to make college more affordable for Wisconsin families. In his State of the State Address, Governor Doyle outlined the Wisconsin Covenant, which will increase access to higher education in Wisconsin. Under the plan, eighth-grade students can take a pledge to stay in school, take challenging courses, and maintain a B average throughout high school, and if they live up to it - the state will ensure that they have a financial assistance package that meets their needs and allows them to attend a UW System school.

Visit to Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove 21425 D Spring Street Union Grove

Governor Doyle will visit the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove with Administration Secretary Steve Bablitch. The Governor will meet with the Department Heads of the facility and will tour the recently dedicated Skilled Nursing Wing. Governor Doyle added 118 new positions at the Union Grove and King Veterans homes in the last budget to provide increased nursing and direct care coverage.

Luncheon with the Young Professionals of Racine Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation (CATI) 2320 Renaissance Boulevard Sturtevant

Governor Doyle, Workforce Development Secretary Roberta Gassman, Commerce Secretary Mary Burke, Agriculture Secretary Rod Nilsestuen, and PSC Chairperson Dan Ebert will meet and have lunch with the Young Professionals of Racine to discuss the Doyle Administration's efforts to create good jobs and attract and retain young talent in the state.

Governor Doyle will tour BRP US, Inc. and meet with its leadership and employees. BRP manufactures recreational products including Ski-Doo� and Lynx� snowmobiles, Sea-Doo� watercraft and sport boats, Johnson� and Evinrude� outboard engines and Can-AmTM all-terrain vehicles, among other products.

Governor Doyle will tour Twin Disc and meet with company management to discuss labor force issues facing Wisconsin businesses. Twin Disc is the leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of power transmission equipment.

Grant Presentation to Racine County Emergency Communications Center Racine County Emergency Communications Center 14116 Washington Avenue Sturtevant

Governor Doyle and Public Service Commission Chairperson Dan Ebert will present Racine County Sheriff Robert Carlson and Racine County Executive Bill McReynolds with a grant for the Emergency Communications Center for their recent system upgrades to enact wireless 911 services.

The First Lady will visit with 4th and 5th graders to encourage reading and academic exploration throughout the summer. The students will summarize their year's progress, and Mrs. Doyle will donate books for summer reading to the students.

The First Lady will talk to seventh grade students about the Governor's plan to make college more affordable, The Wisconsin Covenant. The First Lady will also talk to the 8th graders about moving on to high school and working hard over the summer and will donate books for summer reading to the students.

Visit to Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center 21425-A Spring Street Union Grove

The First Lady will meet with a group of incarcerated women who have been involved in Racine Reads, a community-wide reading project in which residents read the same book at the same time. These women wrote to authors and asked them to autograph a square of muslin for a quilt. They have over 100 signatures already, and the quilt will be raffled off as a fundraiser for the Racine Public Library Foundation , the Racine Literacy Council, and Cops N' Kids.

The First Lady and Tourism Secretary Jim Holperin will tour the Racine Heritage Museum with students from Horlick High School in Racine. The tour will focus specifically on the Underground Railroad and the museum's future expansion efforts.

Tour of Cops 'n Kids Reading Center 800 Villa Street Racine

The First Lady will visit the Cops 'n Kids Reading Center to take a tour and talk to volunteers and students who are involved in the center. The Cops-N-Kids Reading Program started out with police officers distributing books to area children while on routine patrol. The concept caught on and now the program has a neighborhood center with a reading room, tutoring lab and a computer center.

Lt. Governor Lawton will tour the Basement Bijou with Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Jim Holperin. The Basement Bijou is the home of Fred Herme and his 25,000 pipe Wurlitzer organ complete with theatre seating and memorabilia. The Basement Bijou is the largest group tour attraction in Racine County.

Lt. Governor Lawton will participate in a luncheon and listening session with the Racine County Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors and area tourism stakeholders with Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Jim Holperin.

Poclain Hydraulics, Inc. manufactures hydraulic motors for industrial and commercial, construction and farm industries. A French firm, it employs 180, and established this North American Headquarters 10 years ago with assistance from Commerce.

Secretary Burke will meet with senior management, discuss Commerce programs and services, and tour Superior Industrial Coatings. The company provides powder and wet-coating services as well as packaging. The company has nearly 50 employees and is considering expansion.

Visit to Putzmeister, Inc. 1733 90th Street Sturtevant

Secretary Burke will meet with senior management, discuss Commerce programs and services, and tour Putzmeister, Inc. It employs 330, manufactures concrete and truck mounted boom pumps, and telescopic belt conveyors. This is the North American Headquarters for this German Company, and Commerce helped recruit it in the early 1990s. The company is completing an expansion project.

Secretary Burke will meet with senior management, discuss Commerce programs and services, and tour this company. Racine Federated, Inc. manufactures high quality instrumentation, machinery and tools. It employs 200, recently purchased this building as part of an expansion, and is acquiring other companies on an on-going basis. In 2004, Commerce provided $250,000 in Technology Zone tax credits.

Secretary Nilsestuen will tour the manufacturing plant of Case and New Holland tractors. A leader in the farm equipment industry, Case's signature red color is recognized world-wide. Case IH tractors are built to run on 5 percent bio-diesel fuel; New Holland tractors are built to run on 20 percent bio-diesel - the first in the nation. Case has been in Racine since 1844 and has its North American headquarters here.

Secretary Nilsestuen will learn about the development of Yokit, a new dairy product with the potential of profitably expanding Wisconsin's dairy offerings on a national and international scale.

Yokit, Inc. received a nearly $20,000 grant through the Grow Wisconsin Dairy Team to assist with creating marketing materials for this patented, non-refrigerated, instant yogurt. This project develops a new niche market for yogurt mixes and uses Wisconsin ingredients and technology. The Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation Inc., a technology transfer and commercialization organization, helped launch Yokit last year.

Secretary Heinemann will visit Community State Bank, which houses eight branches in addition to the main office. The bank has 93 full-time employees. The bank's former CEO, now retired, Dave Ballweg was very active in the Independent Bankers Association and served as president of the national organization. Secretary Heinemann will meet with CEO Steven Bell and other bank staff.

Secretary Heinemann will give a presentation on identify theft and investment scams to the Belle City Senior Group. The event coordinator at Belle City is inviting other senior groups to this event.

Educators Credit Union is one of the largest credit unions in Wisconsin. They sponsor four school branches and are very proactive in helping their members. Secretary Heinemann will meet with CEO Eugene Szymczak and other credit union staff.

Christening of the Harbor Club at Hometown Harbor Senior Housing Development 1600 Ohio Street Racine

Executive Director Riley will christen the Harbor Club at Hometown Harbor Senior Housing Development, a 2005 WHEDA senior housing tax credit project which is nearly completed. Approximately 60 residents have moved in. There will be a dessert and coffee reception with residents and staff. Racine Mayor Becker will be joining this event.

Tour of Neighborhood Housing Developments NHS of SE WI 1700 Mead Street Racine

Executive Director Riley will tour four Neighborhood Housing Services of Southeastern Wisconsin single family homes that were developed with the help of WHEDA financing. The homes were financed through a $200,000 draw on WHEDA's Revolving Loan Fund. Mayor Gary Becker will be joining this event.

Visit to St. Clair House 4107 Saint Clair Street Racine

Secretary Jackson will tour St. Clair House, an 8 bed men's residential treatment facility. In addition, the Secretary will meet with area substance abuse counselors to discuss issues related to the profession. The Department of Regulation and Licensing is preparing to take on the new responsibility of licensing Substance Abuse Counselors.

Visit to the Chancery Restaurant 207 Gas Light Circle Racine

Secretary Jackson will hold an informal meeting over lunch with area residents serving on various health and business boards under the Department of Regulation and Licensing.

Visit to Racine Board of Realtors Office 900 West Boulevard Racine

Secretary Jackson will meet with area realtors to discuss regulatory issues of concern to the real estate industry.

3:00 p.m.

Visit to O&H Danish Bakery 1841 Douglas Avenue Racine

Secretary Jackson will stop by O&H Danish Bakery to sample and enjoy their world famous pastries and Kringles.

Tour and 'Ready, Set, Go!' Check Presentation North Beach Barker Avenue (At the Beach) Racine

Regulation and Licensing Secretary Celia Jackson will join Tourism Secretary Jim Holperin to tour North Beach, a new 50 acre development along Lake Michigan, designated as a festival site as well as providing hiking and biking trails. Secretary Holperin will also present Ready-Set-Go! checks for the EVP Pro-Am Volleyball Tournament and the Spirit of Racine Triathlon.

Secretary Gomez will meet and discuss insurance issues with staff and board members of the Paris Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Racine County Mutual Insurance Company, Southeast Mutual Insurance Company, Yorkville and Mt. Pleasant Insurance Company.
