UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE STUDENTS, ORGANIZATIONS MAKE DIFFERENCE - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

KENOSHA, Wis., Dec. 10 -- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside issued the following news release:

From the Pringle Nature Center in Kenosha to Racine's John the 23rd Education Center; from the Girl Scouts offices along the Kenosha/Racine county border to a southeastern Wisconsin house that will soon be a home for an area family, dozens of University of Wisconsin-Parkside students became difference makers during the fall semester. The occasion was Make A Difference Day, a national day devoted to helping others, and 140 students from 14 campus organizations gave a morning and early Saturday afternoon to do just that.

'Make a Difference Day is a good way for our students to make connections in the community and to be part of a national event centered around community service,' said Casey Jones, UW-Parkside Volunteer and Experiential Program coordinator. 'Make a Difference Day is billed as a national celebration of neighbors helping neighbors and our students really did their part.'

Although it wasn't a great day to be outdoors, students shook off cloudy skies and chilly temperatures to help restore the Oak Savannah at the Pringle Nature Center by removing invasive species. Another group of students did similar work at the Kerkorian Nature Preserve as part of the Sturtevant Beautification Project.

Some projects, like Habitat For Humanity's gutting of a house on Howe Street in Racine, required students to bring no tools, but others, like the Pike River clean-up led by UW-Parkside's Center for Environmental Education, Demonstration, and Applied Research (CEDAR) in Kenosha asked students to bring 'rubber boots, hip waders, kayak or canoe.' A river clean-up, along with hanging gutters and landscaping, was also part of the effort at UW-Parkside's REC Center in Racine.

Students also assisted the American Red Cross in distributing fire safety door hangers, cleaned and painted at John the 23rd Education Center on Douglas Avenue in Racine, and performed trail maintenance for the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast.

Student organizations involved included A.S.I.A., Zeta Phi Beta, the Parkside Asian Organization, the Parkside International Club, Zeta Sigma Chi MSI, the Black Student Union, the Residence Hall Association, Sigma Lambda Beta, Student Support Services, Latinos Unidos, Habitat for Humanity, the Pre-Health Club, the Critical Thinking Class, and the Parkside Activities Board.

Make a Difference Day was held in late October. For more information please contact: Sarabjit Jagirdar, Email:- htsyndication@hindustantimes.com.
