GOV. DOYLE ANNOUNCES $1.68 MILLION IN STATE SHELTER SUBSIDY GRANTS - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

Gov. Jim Doyle, D-Wis., issued the following news release:

Governor Jim Doyle today announced that 32 Wisconsin agencies will receive $1.68 million in awards through the State Shelter Subsidy Grant program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce.

'It is vitally important to help provide shelter for the homeless people of Wisconsin, particularly now that winter is approaching,' Governor Doyle said. 'This year, we've worked hard to provide additional funding for our local partners. We've increased our allocation by 19 percent over 2006. I applaud the work of these agencies to provide these critical services statewide.'

The State Shelter Subsidy Grant Program was initiated by the Legislature in 1985. The grant provides up to 50 percent of the operating budget of a generic homeless shelter facility or homeless voucher program. The program is open to government agencies or private for-profit and non-profit agencies. These funds provide a consistent funding source on an annual basis for homeless programs across the state.
